Recently, H.O.T. has received several calls from Greyhound owners who have adopted a Greyhound either from a group
that is no longer in operation or from a Greyhound track, and for various reasons, will be unable to keep their Greyhound after a
certain time. For any number of reasons, the individual who called did not want to relinquish their Greyhound immediately to any
adoption group, but wanted assistance in finding their Greyhound a new home. This is definitely not the norm. And due to liability
issues, H.O.T. is unable to assist in rehoming a Greyhound that the owner wants to retain possession of until a new home
is found.
Usually, H.O.T. gets a call regarding a Greyhound who needs to be rehomed, the Greyhound is relinquished to H.O.T.
for placement (after the owner had hopefully brought it's vetting up to date). H.O.T. then evaluates the Greyhound's temperment, places
the Greyhound in a foster home for further evaluation, and the Greyhound's information is then placed on our web site.
H.O.T. WILL NEVER turn away ANY Greyhound we feel is in jeopardy or immediate danger of being dumped or relinquished to a
shelter which does not have the proper experience to handle Greyhounds.
In checking with other breed adoption groups, we found that several offer a telephone referral service to those owners
who do not wish to relinquish their dog to a breed-specific group. So, after discussing this, our Board has made the decision to offer
a telephone referral service for those Greyhound owners who want to rehome their Greyhound but keep the Greyhound in their possession
until a new adoptive home is found.
The Greyhound Telephone Referral as a public service. If you have adopted a H.O.T.
Hound which you are unable to keep, the Return Policy you signed and a copy which was provided to you MUST be adhered to.
If you adopted your Greyhound from another group which is still in operation and the need arises to rehome that Greyhound, that group
should be contacted directly. Again, the Greyhound Telephone Referral is a free service to owners of pure bred Greyhounds ONLY where
support of an adoption group is not available. Through this service, H.O.T. will post a picture or pictures of your Greyhound on our
web site with the present owner as the contact person.
Persons interested in adopting your Greyhound will contact you directly. H.O.T. WILL NOT be involved in the screening process of any
interested parties in any way. Here is a helpful link about how to interview
potential adopters.
Please know that if a home has not been found for your Greyhound by the time needed, H.O.T. will always be available to
take possession of the Greyhound if you choose to surrender him/her at that time.
In order to have your Greyhound eligible for H.O.T.'s Telephone Referral program, you MUST first contact us by telephone. After initial
contact is made, you MUST mail ALL of the following to us.
The owner's complete contact information.
Complete copies of your veterinarian's medical records. These records should reflect that the Greyhound is ALL of the following:
***Heartworm negative and on heartworm preventative
***Current on all vaccinations, including a 7-way (with Bordetella) and Rabies
***Spayed or Neutered
***Dental completed (desired but not required)
Complete information on your Greyhound, including tattoo from your Greyhound's ears so that positive identification may be determined.
(Right ear has either two or three numbers and a letter; left ear has five number. If your Greyhound is Irish, there is a numeric code
in both ears.) We'd also like to know the Greyhound's racing name and where you initially obtained the Greyhound.
Pictures of you Greyhound may be sent to H.O.T..
If you do not have e-mail, you may send photographs along with the requested paperwork to:
Heart of Texas Greyhound Adoption
c/o Telephone Referral Service
24430 Camp Site
San Antonio, Texas 78264
Please note, if actual photographs are sent, they WILL NOT BE RETURNED.
A biographical paragraph about the Greyhound that will be posted along with the pictures. This short bio should include the
Greyhound's qualities, traits, quirks, and history, if known.
H.O.T.'s Telephone Referral Form.
Again, before sending the requested information to H.O.T., please contact us at 210/621-0123. to discuss your Greyhound and
the decision you are making. We will go over verbally what is needed for your Greyhound to be considered for this service.
Once all requirements set forth above have been met, we will then post the information on our web site.
We request that you notify us
when the Greyhound is adopted so we can remove the information about him/her and your contact information from our web site.
NOTE: We do NOT guarantee this service will result in an adoption of your Greyhound. This is provided as a service to the
public ONLY.
If you decide to relinquish your Greyhound, please do so to H.O.T. or any other reputable Greyhound adoption group in
your area.
